Culinary Operations Manager

Alfred Street Baptist Church (ASBC), one of the nation’s oldest and most vibrant congregations, is seeking a Culinary Operations Manager to lead all food service and catering operations for our growing ministry. This role is ideal for a culinary professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys leading teams, and is committed to excellence.

About the Role

The Culinary Operations Manager oversees high-quality meal planning, preparation, and service for ministry programs, meetings, conferences, and large-scale church events. This position ensures safe, efficient kitchen operations; manages staff and volunteers; and delivers exceptional hospitality to our church community and guests.

This is a full-time, onsite role that requires availability on evenings, weekends, and holidays to support worship services and special events.

Key Responsibilities

Meal Planning & Preparation

  • Develop and coordinate menus for church events, special gatherings, and community outreach programs.
  • Oversee the preparation, presentation, and portioning of meals.
  • Ensure all food preparation meets safety and hygiene standards.

Kitchen Operations & Team Leadership

  • Supervise and schedule kitchen staff and volunteers.
  • Maintain kitchen equipment, supplies, and facility cleanliness.
  • Train teams on food safety and sanitation procedures.

Budget & Inventory Management

  • Manage food service budgets, cost controls, and purchasing.
  • Monitor inventory, negotiate with vendors, and track expenditures.
  • Recommend operational improvements to ensure cost-effective service.

Event Catering & Hospitality

  • Partner with ministry leaders to plan and execute catering for events.
  • Coordinate setup, service, and cleanup workflows.
  • Support special dietary needs and accommodations.

Volunteer Coordination

  • Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers assisting with meal service.
  • Foster a welcoming, collaborative environment for all team members.

Health & Safety Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all local health regulations and inspections.
  • Conduct regular audits to maintain a safe, sanitary kitchen environment.
  • Address safety concerns promptly.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Work closely with church staff, ministries, vendors, and volunteers.
  • Communicate food service needs, expectations, and updates clearly.
  • Provide feedback and suggest opportunities for operational improvement.

Core Competencies

  • Strong culinary expertise with a commitment to high-quality presentation.
  • Excellent organization and time-management skills.
  • Experience managing budgets, purchasing, and inventory.
  • Ability to lead and motivate staff and volunteers.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of food safety regulations and best practices.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; culinary credentials preferred.
  • 5–7 years of culinary, catering, or food service experience, including supervision.
  • Experience with large-scale events or high-volume kitchens strongly preferred.
  • ServSafe Manager Certification (or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire).
  • Experience in a church or nonprofit environment a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and basic database systems.

Work Schedule

Evenings, weekends, and holiday hours are required to support worship services, ministry activities, and special events.
